Integration of the Flow Dimensions in Recreational Fitness Training: An Exploratory Investigation

Presentation Type

Poster Presentation

Abstract

While there is a commercial proliferation of flow-focused training and coaching products, research has not investigated the extent to which certified recreational fitness trainers incorporate flow into their work with clients. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nationally-certified trainers (N=4) to explore their awareness of the concept of flow and the extent to which they incorporate the flow dimensions into their work with clients. While participants lacked detailed knowledge of flow theory, all discussed the inherent importance of clear goals and challenge/skill balance. None, however, employed an intentional approach that consistently aligned with the nine dimensions of flow.
