Abstract

Code of Conduct, a young adult memoir excerpt, pushes against the conventions of both genres. Using the plot-driven hero’s journey of a young adult novel, Code of Conduct is about the university disciplinary process that persona endures while reporting a sexual assault. In the longer work, the divide between persona and narrator is presented using documents as evidence from the process. In this excerpt, a moment of trauma is relived during a doctor’s examination. This is done as a way to reveal the situation of the narrative without conveying self-blame that could be damaging to a victim or young adult reader.
